Model Etiquette: 10 Unwritten Rules of Working on Set
The models who work consistently are not always the best looking. They are the easiest to work with. Here are 10 unwritten rules that production teams wish every model knew before stepping on set.
1. Put Your Phone Away
When the camera is out, your phone should not be. Check it during breaks, not between shots. Nothing signals disinterest faster than a model scrolling Instagram while the crew adjusts lighting.
2. Arrive Ready, Not Just On Time
On time means 15 minutes early. Ready means groomed, hydrated, and mentally present — not rushing in with wet hair and a coffee in hand.
3. Do Not Touch the Wardrobe Until You Are Told To
The stylist has prepared specific pieces in a specific order. Wait for direction before handling any clothing, accessories, or props.
4. Take Direction Without Ego
When a photographer says "chin down slightly," do it. Do not argue, do not explain your preferred angle. They can see what the camera sees. You cannot.
5. Never Criticize the Clothing, Product, or Set
Even if you think the outfit is unflattering or the set looks cheap, keep it to yourself. You are being paid to make it look good. That is literally the job.
6. Eat Before You Arrive
Do not rely on craft services or catering. Eat a proper meal before the shoot. Low energy shows on camera, and asking "when is lunch?" 30 minutes into a shoot is not a good look.
7. Learn Everyone's Name
The photographer, the art director, the stylist, the makeup artist, the coordinator. Use their names. It costs nothing and people remember.
8. Do Not Leave Without Saying Thank You
When you wrap, thank the key people individually. A 30-second round of handshakes and genuine thanks leaves a lasting impression.
9. Never Post Behind-the-Scenes Without Permission
The campaign may not have launched yet. The client may not want leaks. Always ask before posting anything from set to your social media.
10. Follow Up After the Shoot
A short message to the coordinator — "Thanks for a great shoot, happy to work together again" — takes 10 seconds and keeps you top of mind for the next casting. The models who do this consistently are the ones who build careers on JIDA.
